Our guest this month is Steph Routh, winner of a Portland Society Fund scholarship.

Self-publishing feels awesome and empowering. Thanks to the Portland Society Fund, Steph was able to participate in the Independent Publishing Resource Center’s Fiction / Creative Nonfiction Certificate Program. The Certificate program focused on writing skills during the first semester and book arts and self-publishing in the second semester. Steph’s final project was her first published zine titled, “How to Move by Bike.” We’ll talk about basics of the process of creating a zine and how awesome it feels, followed by Q&A.

As always, prospective members are invited to attend. Coffee and light fare provided. If you would like to pay your dues by check or credit card, you can do so at the event; or you can set up automatic payments here.

Our speaker for this month is Jill Cropp, owner of Studio Cropp Architecture. Cropp will talk about how she made the journey from quitting her day job to building a thriving business in a short period of time.

-Our first-ever evening meeting, by popular request, will be on Thursday, March 21st at 7pm at Velo Cult, 1969 NE 42nd. Be prepared to get up and talk for up to 5 minutes about your relationship with your bicycle … or feel free to just listen the first time around. Beer and other beverages will be available for sale.

- The next regular morning meeting will be from 8-9am on Wednesday, April 3rd at Western Bikeworks, NW 17th and Lovejoy. Coffee and light treats will be provided. Our speaker this month is Rebecca Miller of eWomenNetwork.

How to maximize your effect, leverage your relationships, and make more income from referrals

Bio:
Rebecca Miller is a professional speaker and has a business called Rebecca Speaking, where she connects people to the resources they need for personal and business development. Rebecca is also the Managing Director for the Portland Chapter of eWomen Network, a premier women’s business networking group. Her experiences of being a successful stockbroker, leader, and entrepreneur are invaluable in helping others to find and achieve their own personal and professional goals.

Our guest speaker for March is Dr. Kelly Clifton, who will speak about her groundbreaking research in active transportation and the current state of academic work on bicycling and walking.

Kelly J. Clifton is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Portland State University. Dr. Clifton conducts research and teaches courses in various aspects of transportation planning and policy, including: travel behavior, land use and transportation, physical activity and health, and travel survey methods. Her current research projects have focused tools to aid in forecasting the demand for transportation, looking at the connections between land use and transportation at multiple scales and incorporating multiple modes.

Portland Society board member Lindsay Kandra will be presenting “Contracts 101″ at this meeting. She will cover basic topics, including “How to Know if You’ve Entered Into a Contract,” “Essential Pieces of Your Contracts,” and “What to do When Something Goes Wrong.”

Lindsay is a 2003 graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law. She currently works for Multnomah County’s County Attorneys Office and has expertise in Government Law, Energy Law, Intellectual Property and Oregon’s property tax system. She also knows a lot about contracts.

We are really excited to have the one and only Kristin Wille of Kwik Interactive (kwikinteractive.com) present to us in the New Year. She will be talking about how to work with a web professional: what to look for when hiring, how to prepare ahead of time to save time and money, and when it is best to go the DIY route.

Kristin has been working as a professional web designer and developer since 2006. After 3 years of late nights at an agency, she went solo and has been freelancing happily ever since.

This month’s speaker is Meghan Humphreys, who works for EarthShare Oregon, Oregon’s only environmental workplace giving federation. She trains EarthShare’s member charities to represent their causes and raise funds through public presentations at businesses throughout the state.

She will give a talk about public speaking and presentation skills, focusing first on how to handle your nerves and compose yourself to speak, and second on the elements of a good story for public presentation.

Registration deadline is October 15th

Space is limited, and advance registration is required. The cost is $25 for members, and $50 for non-members. If you decide to join the Portland Society after attending the Boot Camp, your event fee can be applied towards your membership. Your registration fee covers all workshops, snacks and coffee, lunch, and an afternoon yoga session.

The Portland Society Fund Committee is also excited to announce that we will offer one Portland Society member the chance to attend the National Bike Summit in Washington D.C. on March 4-7th, 2013. This opportunity will build the attendee’s skills and amplify the Portland Society’s voice on a national stage to the benefit of our organization, Portland’s community, and the attendee’s own profession or business.

The Fund plans to sponsor one member each year. The sponsorship includes up to $1,000 for travel and conference registration fees.

Applications for the Portland Society Bike Summit scholarship are available on the Portland Society website and are due October 31^st, 2012.

The event is Wednesday, August 8th from 6-9pm at the Lucky Lab, 1700 N Killingsworth. Program starts at 7pm, but there are only 45 seats so be sure to get there early. The public is invited.
